Seafarer Docs

Privacy policy

What this app collects

Nothing about you is collected by or sent to the developer. There is no account, no sign-up, no e-mail address and no analytics. The developer cannot see your documents, your name, your ships, your ports or how you use the app. The adverts and the Wear OS watch tile, if you use it, are described below.

Where your data is stored

Everything you enter – documents with their numbers and dates, photos and PDF files, your sea service, courses and trips, My ships with their photos and notebooks, visited places and traces with their positions, the packing list, quick notes, your own help numbers and your profile – is stored on this phone only, in the app's private folder, which no other app can read. Android's automatic cloud backup is switched off for this app, so nothing is copied to your Google account. Uninstalling the app deletes all of it. Backup writes one file to a place you choose; where that file goes afterwards is up to you. You can protect the file with a password (AES-256 encryption); without one, anyone who has the backup file can open it and read everything in it. If you use the Seafarer Docs tile on a Wear OS watch, the phone and your own watch exchange your current work or rest status, the switches made on the watch, your Ship locker kits and what was taken with them – through Google Play services, which connects the two. The watch keeps its own copy of these until you remove Seafarer Docs from the watch too.

Location

The app uses your location only while a screen that needs it is open, and only after you allow it: “Add current place” in Visited places, to suggest the nearest port; Traces, to show whether the GPS has a fix and your current position as a pulsing dot; “From my position (GPS)” in the Distance calculator, for the distance and speed to a destination; and “Find my country by GPS” in I need help!. A position is saved only when you add a place or tap “Add current position” in a trace – on this phone, and nowhere else except a backup file you make yourself. You can say no and pick or type places instead. The app never follows you in the background.

Permissions

Notifications – for the daily reminder about expiring documents. Location – only as described above. Fingerprint or screen lock – checked by the phone itself; the app only learns whether it worked, never your fingerprint or PIN. Photos are taken with the phone's own camera app or picked from your gallery, so the app has no camera permission of its own.

Use of the internet

The app uses the internet only for the advert at the bottom of the screen and, once real adverts are switched on, for the advertising consent screen. Your documents, photos, sea service, ships, ports and traces are never sent over it.

Adverts

Adverts are supplied by Google AdMob. AdMob may use identifiers such as the Android advertising ID to show and personalise adverts, under Google's own privacy policy (policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites). In this beta the adverts are Google's public test adverts. Before real adverts appear, users in the EU will be shown Google's consent screen and can refuse personalised adverts.

I need help!

Your location is used here only when you tap “Find my country by GPS”, to pick the country and sort the nearest places – on the phone, never sent anywhere. The numbers you add yourself and your chosen citizenship stay on this phone and go only into a backup you make. A call is made by your phone's own dialler, after you press call.

Hours of work and rest, and the CV

Your hours of work and rest and everything you type for the CV – including your date of birth, contact details and photo – are stored on this phone only, like the rest of your data, and go only into a backup file you make yourself. If you use the Wear OS watch tile, your current work or rest status is also shared with your own watch. Every CV field is optional. The CV leaves the phone only when you print it or save it as a PDF and send it on yourself.

Your data, your call

Because your data stays on your phone, you control it: you can view, change or delete any entry at any time. Deleting an entry or uninstalling the app removes it from the phone. The app keeps no copy elsewhere, so the developer has nothing to hand over or delete on request.

Children

This app is made for working seafarers. It is not directed at children under 13 (under 16 in the EU), and no information is knowingly collected from them.
